Swimming again...

After much deliberation, Geoff and I joined the Y last week. I'll be going to water aerobics Tuesday and Thursday mornings (while the boys are at school) and we'll go together on Wednesday nights (while Jaylen is in Awana and Trevor stays with Geoff's mom). I couldn't believe how horrible I did the first few times trying to swim some laps! But, now that I'm getting used to the whole turning-my-body-to-the-side-to-breathe thing again, I'm getting a lot better. My goal the other night was to swim 16 laps (which is about a half a mile). We both did it! I won't lie and say we did it without stopping, but we did do the 16 laps. My next goal will be to swim a mile (33 laps) but that's going to take a while. Part of the problem is it's hard to get to the pool at the times they have lap swim only. So then the problem is, if we go during open swim, there are no lanes set aside, so we risk t-boning people (since you look down and to the side, not in front of you). So we don't always get a big chunk of time to swim... But regardless, I'm really excited to be back in the pool and getting a little bit back into shape!

Seaside!!

We spent the week before Labor Day with Geoff's family in Seaside, Oregon. It was beautiful! We were very fortunate with the weather (the guys couldn't even fly their kites most of the time because there wasn't enough wind). We stayed in a condo with Geoff's parents (his brother Kevin and his family, and his Grandma stayed in a condo down the hall). It was right on the beach, and had a great pool and hot tubs. We had so much fun... we're talking about going every year, or every other year, to the same spot. We visited Cannon Beach, and went to Camp 18 (a logging-themed restaurant that is our favorite!). Did a little shopping around Seaside, played a few games with the kids at the arcade, and Geoff and I got to enjoy the hot tub most nights from 9-10 (adults only at that time) while Geoff's parents stayed in the condo as the kids slept. Perfect arrangement!

Woodland Park Zoo

On our way down to Seaside the end of August, we stopped by the Woodland Park Zoo. We all had a great time, and the kids especially loved the Zoomazium (it's an indoor play area for kids). Geoff's mom wasn't doing so hot after the knee replacement, so she had to spend some of the time in a wheelchair, but the kids loved riding on her lap all over the place. :) After the zoo, we headed down to Tumwater (near Olympia) where we spent a couple of nights in a hotel. We took the kids to Cabela's, which was fun for all of us. Of course, Jaylen and Trevor's favorite parts were the fish, the elevator, and the escalator. I think they would have spent hours on the escalator alone had they been given the choice, but we wanted to see more than just moving stairs. :) I didn't get any pictures at Cabela's, but here are some from the zoo...

The Fair and Derby, 2009!

Ok, it's obviously been too long since I've posted since I have to start with fair pictures, and the fair was a month and a half ago! BUT - we had a BLAST at the fair this year (as usual), and of course we also loved cheering on my brother Linsey in the demo derby! Trevor stayed with Geoff's mom while I took Jaylen to the derby. I was a little nervous taking Jaylen, since it's SO loud, and there are just so many people, not to mention a totally new place. But, Jaylen surprised me. He had so much fun, and was so excited to see all these cars crashing in to each other! We used Geoff's shooting earmuffs to help deaden the sound (we've used these before and they are a life-saver with Jaylen!), which really helped. We ended up getting tickets to the evening derby, so we took Trevor along for that. He also thought the derby was great, and both boys cheered along with the rest of us. Since Geoff was busy all day Monday helping with the derby car, the four of us went back on Tuesday to see the fair together.

Well, we had a great time at the fair, and just got back from a WONDERFUL vacation in Seaside, Oregon. Now my sister is here from Arizona with her family, so we're busy spending lots of time with them. So... I will be posting some pictures on here at some point! I just make no promises as to when. :)

A Morning at the Movies...

The theatre here at our mall plays movies for free during the summer, and I've been wanting to try it out with Jaylen. This week they were playing Alvin and the Chipmunks, and I figured he'd get a kick out of the little chipmunks with there funny voices. So last night, Jaylen was getting pretty excited about it... until this morning about the time we left the house he said he didn't want to go because it was too scary. The whole way there, he was not wanting to go. I fugured, well, we'll at least go to the mall, and if nothing else, play in the play area. Once we got there, he wanted to go in the stroller (he never wants this!) so I let him. As soon as we walked into the mall, he took one look at the arcade games in the theatre, and another at the candy, and he wanted in! So just like that, we got our popcorn and went straight in, no problem! He sat in the stroller for a few minutes, then wanted to sit in the "cool chair" that almost folded in half on him. But overall, a very good experience! Sometimes I have to push Jaylen a little out of his comfort zone, I think it's good for him! Trevor was with us, by the way, and didn't seem to mind it... although he didn't particularly enjoy it either. I guess you could say he tolerated it. :)

Chuck E Cheese

Last Saturday we took the boys to Chuck E Cheese for dinner... Oh, did they have a blast! Jaylen couldn't stop talking about it, and Trevor was so excited when we got there, he was just vibrating!

After dinner there, we had to stop by Krispie Kreme, where we got doughnuts and the boys got the cute paper hats. Trevor loved his so much he wanted to wear it to church the next morning!!

Artist's Point

A few weeks ago, on a hot Sunday afternoon, we took the boys for a drive up to Artist's Point. It was beautiful! They, of course, got a kick out of playing in the snow (in 80+ degree weather, no less), and really loved going for a little hike. We ate our picnic lunch in the back of the van to get out of the sun, and threw a few snowballs around. Fun day!

PDDNOS

Last week Monday we had Jaylen's appointment with Dr Zinner (the pediatric developement specialist who is an expert on autism and works at the University and Seattle Children's I believe). How did it go? I have mixed feelings. Dr Zinner himself was not an overly friendly person, he seemed to just want to get through the appointment, and didn't really interact with Jaylen a whole lot (although sometimes you have to push Jaylen to get him to interact with you). The appointment itself was not really what I expected. I was expecting questions about Jaylen's behavior, the odd things he says or does, his interaction with others... but it was mostly family history and Jaylen's medical history. Maybe that's because he had enough info from reports from the school and Jaylen's visit with Dr Harle last month, I'm not sure. Dr Zinner explained that in 2012 the diagnostic standards will be changed so that any child with symptoms that fall under the autism/PDD umbrella will be labeled with PDD (Pervasive Developement Disorder) and then the symptoms will be specified. I guess this kind of makes sense, like he said, you can have 10 children with Aspergers in a room, and every one of them will be different with different symptoms. He (and Dr Harle also mentioned this in his report) feels that Jaylen would clearly not have Aspergers, because Jaylen had a speech delay and that automatically disqualifies that diagnosis. Dr Zinner gave Jaylen a "provisional" (meaning it will help him qualify for services for now, although it is not specific) diagnosis of PDD NOS (Pervasive Developement Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified).
So, while we were going to this appointment hoping to get a more definite diagnosis of what it is Jaylen has, we were given a much more general diagnosis. I think the idea behind this is, work on the symptoms since that's all you can do with autism anyhow. Instead of a specific label, give a general label, and zero in on the specific symptoms. I guess this really doesn't change much, after all Jaylen is who Jaylen is, and no label (correct or incorrect) will change him. It just wasn't really what we were expecting!

Jaylen has been going to Vacation Bible School at the CRC here in town, and last night they had a program. The video I got is of Jaylen singing the one song that he did pretty good for. Before this song (his favorite) he refused to go up on the stage. After the song he was all over the side of the stage... jumping off of it, laying on it - you know - all THAT kind of stuff that none of the other kids are doing?! Yes, that's my kid. Oh, this little boy... he's keeping me humble. I guess God has a way of doing that with all of us! But hey, it's an improvement from his preschool program when he wouldn't even go near the stage... :)

Just an update on a few things... Trevor is doing really good with potty training. He's still working on the communicating when he needs to pee, and holding it, and he hasn't pooped on the potty yet, but overall I think he's doing pretty good! He seems to have somewhat of an allergy or something with milk. So we're trying rice milk and so far it has helped a lot. No more diarrhea! (At least when I remember I can't give him milk - seems so simple to remember but somehow I forget every once in a while...) He's also talking a lot more - complete sentences most of the time, like "I don't want to go potty" or "I don't want to hug." (Can you tell we've hit the terrible two's?!) Moving on... Jaylen's appointment with the psychiatrist went good... at least I think it did. He (Dr Harle) will be sending us a letter with his impressions, and he agreed that Jaylen seeing Dr Zinner (the autism specialist) is a good idea. That appointment is coming up in July, so we shall see what that brings.
Jaylen has been going to VBS here in Sumas this week and is having a lot of fun. The singing was a bit rough for him at first (couple songs where the kids shout really loud), but he seems to have adapted and actually likes it now.
Tomorrow is Sumas Community Days, so we'll have a fun day going to the parade and the park with lots of fun activities for the kids, and then a great fireworks show tomorrow night.
I'll be flying solo with the kids next week starting Wednesday while Geoff takes a motorcycle trip with his dad for a few days. It should be fun... We might keep Geoff's mom company for a bit - she just had a knee replacement on Monday and will spend most of the summer recovering.

Tip of the day...

Make sure you check a pull-up for poop BEFORE pulling it down to take the child potty... you could end up with poop on the bathroom floor... at McDonalds. Yuck.

Back home...

After a great time in sunny Arizona, I am back home! I flew in on Wednesday and Geoff and the boys met me at the airport with a balloon and flowers! It was so good to see them again - I missed them all so much. I wondered what Jaylen would do when he saw me... When he first saw me, he started to say, "But I don't want you to come home yet." But then he gave me a big hug and seemed excited to see me... Trevor was too. He was all smiles to see me again. :)

I had a lot of fun with Wendy and the kids... Samantha gave me the silent treatment the first day and a half, but once she got used to me we had a great time together. It was fun to play with a little girl - so different then my rough-and-tumble boys. I took the kids to Burger King and the park to feed the ducks one night, and Zion especially loved that. We got to swim at Wendy's in-laws' place (Zion loves it - that kid is like a fish!), go to the zoo, do a little shopping... but no baby yet. My mom is down there now to help out, hopefully the baby will be here soon - before she leaves!

It's good to be back in my own home now... Jaylen got me right back into the swing of things last night. He was having such a meltdown he ended up going to bed at 7:20 (VERY early for him!) with no dinner. Then spent another half hour crying in his bed. Whew! Was I glad he slept the whole night and woke up in a good mood!

Leaving... on a jet-plane

Tomorrow is the day! I'm heading to Arizona tomorrow to visit my sister and hopefully-soon-to-arrive niece or nephew... Unfortunately, we found out a couple of weeks ago that Jaylen's preschool program is the same day and time that I need to be at the airport. So Geoff is going to bring me to my sister-in-law's place so she can bring me to the airport and Geoff and the boys can go to the program (and my mom will be there too). Lucky for me, we've had some 80 and 90 degree weather here, so I'm getting in shape for the Arizona heat! It'll be hard being away from the boys for a week, but I think it will be good bonding time for them with Geoff. And it'll be really fun to hang out with my sister and her family. I even get to have a massage there on Thursday! Thank you, Wendy's friend! :)

Update on potty training.... Trevor is doing REALLY well! I've been surprised at how good it has gone so far. He needs to learn how to hold it still, and also to poop on the potty, but I think we've made great progress!

Jaylen is done with school - Friday was his last day. I think he's happy to be done, but I'm guessing he'll miss the time of playing with the kids there. Good thing we live in a great neighborhood with lots of kids his age - he loves playing outside and riding bikes with the other kids. I think he would live outside if he could. Yesterday at my mom's house he was outside literally all day - starting before breakfast!

Well, I am off to finish cleaning the house, doing the laundry, packing, and everything else I need to do before tomorrow morning!

update...

Today we started potty training Trevor... put the cute little undies on and away we went. He's peeing on the potty pretty good, he just needs a little time to figure out the holding part of it. He did end up pooping in his underwear (which, I'm sure you don't want to know, but looked really funny) but overall, not a bad first day potty training.

Our bathroom is almost done - we've had a few minor setbacks. The only thing that needs to happen yet is the patch on the drywall by the sink. Geoff was trying to attach the new towel holder to the wall and ended up hitting conduit, then found out most of that wall has a metal plate on the other side of the drywall. Anyhow - ended up with a few holes really close that now need to be patched. But - I will have before and after pictures soon. I love how much better it looks! (I guess anything would have been a major improvement, but I really like it!)

Cinco de mayo...

I was just thinking about the fact that today is May 5th. Exactly one year ago we found out that Jaylen (probably) has Aspergers. We had gone camping the weekend before with my family, and I remember trying to not think about the fact that we were going to find out the results of all of Jaylen's testing on Monday. I wanted things to just keep going the way they were, to be unaware of any problems he might have. I was already figuring they were going to tell us our son had autism, and who wants to hear that? Jaylen was improving, talking better, becoming more social. Surely he was just coming out of his shell, right? Maybe we can pretend a little longer that nothing is wrong... Well, Monday came and Geoff and I took the boys to the school to meet with the psychologist, speech therapist, and special ed preschool teacher. I remember going over charts and graphs and talking over some of the results, and then the psychologist looking a little nervously at me as he was about to drop the A-bomb. But it was Aspergers, not autism. I kind of knew a little about aspergers, but not a whole lot - mostly that it was similar to autism, but very high-functioning autism. I was a little teary-eyed, but in a way, I was actually kind of relieved. Now we knew what we were dealing with and we could start doing just that - dealing with it.

I was a little afraid of Jaylen having a "label" because I was afraid he wouldn't be pushed and challenged; after all, he's an incredibly smart little kid. But the more I thought about it, I realized that a label would not change Jaylen. He is who he is and God made him who he is. Knowing what Jaylen's challenges are would help us understand how to be better parents for him and what services he would need to help him.

Jaylen was enrolled in preschool to start in September, and I had mixed feelings. I was hoping it would be good for him, but didn't really think it would make much of a difference. Was I really ready to put my 3 year old on a bus and send him off to strangers? I had no clue how big of an impact his being in preschool was going to make. Jaylen has come so far, in his behavior, his speech, his social skills, really overall it has made a huge difference. This is not to say we don't still have our challenges, trust me, we do! But he's making so much progress! And as I said earlier, he's one smart kid. He basically taught himself to read, and can now pick up a kids book he's never seen and start reading it with little help. I think math will be a strong point for him too. Counting and adding just come natural to him!

So here we are, a year after first discovering our son (probably) has Aspergers. Tomorrow morning a nurse is coming from the health department for a home visit with me and Jaylen. We're starting the process to have Jaylen officially diagnosed. In July, we will have an appointment in Bellingham with Dr Zinner from Seattle - he works at Children's Hospital and the University of Washington. I kinda have this "here we go again" feeling, like what will we find out this time? I've heard so many stories of kids being evaluated by different doctors and getting different stories from each one. I'm praying this whole process will go smoothly and we'll be able to get a clear diagnosis. But once again, I'm reminded that Jaylen is who he is, and no diagnosis will change that. We love this little (big) guy and nothing will change that either!

Oh boy, we have a bit of explaining to do. With all the pregnant aunties, he knows babies start out in tummys, but God made us... so I guess he just put the two together!

Later on, we were reading in Jaylen's children's Bible and he asked about heaven, and if we could skadoo there (think Blue's Clues!)...

Tip of the Day...

When your 1 or 2 year old starts making sounds like Flipper, don't laugh at or encourage it. He'll start doing it ALL THE TIME. And he'll start doing it louder. Including at the library, and when your library has high ceilings, it's especially loud.

Tip of the day...

Never put wallpaper up in your house. Really, just don't do it. Cause even if you like it, you probably won't live there forever... at some point someone will probably be taking it down. I've been working on our little hallway half bathroom this week, and it's been a real challenge! I've spent quite a few hours removing wallpaper, lots of it inch by inch... It's a lot of work - and I'm still not done getting it all down! I took some before-pictures. When we're done and I have after-pictures, I'll post them... :)

Child-like faith

Jaylen has been sitting in "big" church with us, and yesterday we had communion. We have it monthly, so he's seen it a few times. The first couple of times we only explained to him that the juice and crackers are not for him, only mommy and daddy. Yesterday, we kind of talked a bit about what we were doing. I explained that we were celebrating Jesus, and that the juice reminds us of Jesus' blood that takes away our sin, and the cracker reminds us of His body that died for us. I told him that because Jesus died, we can live and go to heaven. He asked me if I had to die too, and I told him Jesus died FOR me, to pay for my sin so I can go to heaven. With the cutest big eyes looking up at me, he said, "And I can go to heaven too?" We also talked about how Jesus didn't stay dead, but rose from the dead and went to heaven with God. It really struck me that the Gospel is so simple, that in those few statements I can explain it to my four year old. And yet, we will always have something to learn about God and His Word.

Potty time...

Trevor has been showing a little interest in the potty lately, wanting to sit on it and try to go "pa-y." Well tonight after his bath he was running around naked, and I had just told Jaylen to go potty. So Trevor went in the other bathroom, and by the time I realized it, he had peed! Mostly on the floor in front of the toilet (he was trying to be like his big brother and stand up!) but some did end up in the potty. Unfortunately he was also standing in it, so I had to wash him up again, but I was pretty excited for him! We'll see if he keeps trying out the potty (I'm not going to push him), but at least it's a start!

First Day of Preschool

Today was Trevor's first day of preschool. He did so good! This morning when I brought him he just walked right in and starting playing, didn't have any problems with me leaving. When I picked him up the teachers said he did really good and went along with everything really well. The speech therapist also said he did very good in his time with her, repeating words and things like that. The boys both love the train table they have set up - in fact, Jaylen wanted to stay, too! I think I can handle this - two hours, one day a week. I'm hoping it will be really good for him. And it will be fun having one on one time with Jaylen too...

Lions and tigers and bears...

Last week Friday Geoff took the day off, and Jaylen had off of school for mid-winter break, so we took a trip to the Woodland Park Zoo! The boys had a blast... Jaylen's favorite was the hippos, but they kinda scared Trevor (actually really scared him - he was trying to claw his way out the back of the stroller I think!). But we got to see gorillas, a lion, a tiger, bears, elephants, giraffes, a jaguar (my favorite), pink flamingos, zebras, and a whole bunch of other animals. It was a great time. They also have this cool thing called Zoomazium - an indoor place where kids can run, slide, play, and just get out some energy! That was a big hit with the boys too.

Happy Birthday, Geoff!

Last week Thursday (March 5) was Geoff's birthday... So the boys and I brought doughnuts to his work to share with the guys. Of course Jaylen and Trevor had to have the "sprinkle" doughnuts!

That night we got a babysitter for the boys and we went to CJ's Beachhouse in Birch Bay for dinner. It was SO good! I got the salmon - it was so pretty I had to take a picture. :o)

The "Bounce House"

Last Saturday, I took the boys to the Jump Around Fun Zone with my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and nephew Zack. They have a bunch of inflatable bounce houses and slides. I didn't really know how Jaylen would react since it's really loud in there with tons of kids running everywhere, but he just ran right in and went all over the place! This was the only picture I got since my camera battery died right after (*sigh*), but you can see he was having a good time! Trevor was a bit intimidated by the bounce houses and slides, so he pretty much stayed by the little slide and playhouse for smaller kids. But one of the staff took him to the top of the big slide and slid down with him (parents are not allowed to go up there with the kids). He loved it, but couldn't quite get himself up there on his own. We were there for about 2 hours, and you should have seen Jaylen's red face! He definitely burned up a bunch of energy that morning!

Green Eggs and a Ham!

Jaylen is such a picky eater, and I've never been able to get him to eat eggs. Well, we borrowed from the library a DVD with Dr Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham on it, and the morning after watching it, he asked if he could have some! Well, hey! I was ready to give it a shot! He was pretty excited as he helped me make them... Did he eat them? Well, he had a couple bites, and kept saying, "Boy, I love green eggs." But that was about it! Oh well, that's more bites of eggs than I've been able to get him to eat before, so I won't complain! And he had fun too... So well worth it. :o)

Coffee Time

One day last week, Geoff called and left a message on our answering machine for Jaylen (while I was at the school with the boys). He said he was on his way home and would love to have some coffee, so he asked Jaylen to make him some. Boy, did this make Jaylen's day! He loves to drink coffee, but he also loves to help make it. Well, this time he got to do it all on his own!
In the first picture he has his hands around his mouth... this is what he does sometimes when I tell him to smile. Having Aspergers, he can't quite connect emotions and expressions. He knows when people look happy or sad, but if you ask him to smile or show you a mad or sad face, you never know what you're going to get!

Big week....

This has been a big week - Tuesday the boys had dental check-ups, yesterday we had a meeting at the school for Trevor to start in the birth to three program, and today we had their checkups at the pediatrician. Tomorrow morning we'll be going to Trevor's classroom to check it out and meet the teachers. He will start next week - just Thursday mornings from 9 - 11. He'll have speech therapy during this time, and they will also keep an eye on his adaptive and motor skills. He qualified for occupational therapy for adaptive on the original eval done by the health department, but he seems to be right on for his age, so there's really nothing specific for them to work on. We'll see how he does, we always have the option to take him out if we don't like how things are going, or for any other reason. My hope is that when they re-evaluate next year, things will be pretty well on track and he won't need to go into the preschool program. We'll see! I kind of have mixed feelings about Trevor going to the program, part of me thinks he's just fine, why are we doing this? The other part knows that starting speech now will only help. He's starting to get really frustrated when we don't understand him. And I think the time with peers will be a good thing. The check-ups this morning went pretty good. Thankfully, Geoff's work was shutdown today due to the snow, so he was able to come with. I was so concerned about getting Jaylen in there and not so worried about Trevor, but Jaylen did great and Trevor was the one who cried half the time! I was really impressed with how Jaylen just walked right in, no problems; talked to the doctor and nurse, everything. I never know how he's going to do in different situations, so I was quite relieved that he did so great! Jaylen is still 95th percentile for height and over that for weight (52 pounds), and Trevor is still 90th percentile for weight (31.5 pounds) and over the 95th for height! We got some big boys! Jaylen also impressed the doctor with his counting by 5's and 10's... he loves to show off how smart he is. :)

Woohoo! Trevor is 2!

Yesterday was Trevor's second birthday... I can't believe my baby is 2 already! We had his party on Saturday night, what a fun time! Uncle Bryan made balloon animals for the kids, and we had a pinata too... Trevor had so much fun - he loved it when everyone sang Happy Birthday and blew out the candles all by himself. He got the hat in the picture from his Oma, he had it on almost all night!
